Areas of Interest
Location, location, location! Location is a major concern for students, especially those who are unfamiliar with Manchester. A very large number of the queries we receive at MSH relate to the location of properties and these tend to come under one or more of the following:
Popular areas
Groups of students who have met in Halls and are now looking for private accommodation for their second year are often interested in remaining in the same area as their Halls. Areas with several Halls of residence have become very popular with groups of students. These include:
- Manchester City Centre
- Hulme
- Chorlton-on-Medlock
- Rusholme
- Victoria Park
- Fallowfield
- Withington
- Didsbury
and for Salford University students:
- Lower Broughton
- Charleston
- Weaste
Areas with several schools or which may be considered more upmarket or community-centred may be more popular with students with families or mature or postgraduate students. These include:
- Didsbury
- Levenshulme
- Burnage
- Chorlton
Close to Universities / Oxford Road
Students looking for homes ‘close to Oxford Road’ are usually referring to the busy Oxford Road/Wilmslow Road bus ‘corridor’. Renowned for being the busiest bus route in Europe, this road has a reputation amongst students as the main vein of university life. Students may be put off by homes they consider to be ‘far’ from the Universities, often places the rest of us would consider to be fairly close! They may be reassured, however, by good bus routes.
‘Safe’ areas
Students often ask us which areas are safe. We generally advise that there are no perfectly safe areas in a major city like Greater Manchester, but that there are several things they can do to reduce risks. This includes choosing a secure home, preferably on a well-lit street, the closer to bus routes the better.
