Code of Standards

The code of standards is the cornerstone of the Manchester Student Homes service. It ensures that landlords keep their properties and their management in shape whilst also helping to make sure that students who use MSH are safe, secure and happy!

Code Registered Properties

All landlords who advertise their properties with MSH commit to our Code of Standards. The Code aims to improve standards in student housing by asking landlords to commit to a number of clauses on the quality and safety of their properties and their management practices and relationship with their tenants. If you ever have problems with a Code property or landlord, there is much more we can do to help than if they are not registered with us. Our Housing Officer is here to advise, and can often step in where there are more complex or ongoing issues. Download the Code of Standards here, or give us a call on 0161 275 7680 to find out more.

Code Plus Properties

Code Plus properties meet an extra set of high standards as well as all the standards set out in the mandatory Code. Take a look at our landlord Code of Standards by clicking this link, or give us a call on 0161 275 7680 to find out more.

Having Problems?

If your landlord's committed to the MSH Code of Standards, we're in a good position to help if you have problems. If you're having difficulties with your Code home or landlord, you might want to make a Code Complaint. Don't be put off by the word 'complaint' - this is your chance to get your voice heard but it's also intended as a fair and open hearing. As you can probably appreciate, we'll need to get your landlord's side of the story too. Our job is to reach a fair resolution that suits both sides as far as possible.

What you'll need to do:

1. Read the Code of Standards carefully.

If your home was advertised as 'Code' (C) or 'Code Plus' (C+), your landlord will have signed on the dotted line to assure you of certain standards in the accommodation they provide and good practices in their relationship with you. You can make a Code Complaint if you feel that your landlord has broken one or more of the clauses in the Code of Standards. You'll need to identify which clauses these are.

2. Complete a Code Complaint Form

We'll need to know which clauses you feel have been broken and as much detail as possible about how this has happened. You can download the form and return it to us by email or in person

3.Make an appointment with our Housing Officer.

Contact us by phone, email or in person to arrange to come in to our offices to discuss your situation.

4. Mediation

Our Housing Officer will invite you and your landlord to come in at a time that's convenient to both of you. If you've got housemates, they'll be asked to come too. The Housing Officer or a member of the management team will lead a discussion about the problems you've been having and will help you come to an agreement on how to move forward.

5. Summary

After mediation, we'll send you and your landlord a written summary of what was discussed and what was agreed.
